Adventure Buddy

Privacy

Your adventures are yours. Here is, plainly, what the Adventure Buddy app, its addon and this website do with your information, and what they don’t.

Draft policy. Last updated 11 October 2026. Adventure Buddy hasn’t been publicly released yet; this page will be reviewed and finalized before launch. During development, some file and folder names still use the project’s working name, CharacterGPT.

Your Privacy at a Glance

  • It runs on your computer. The desktop app and the addon keep your character information and conversations on your own PC. We don’t run a server that receives them.
  • You bring your own AI. When you press Send, the app talks directly to your AI provider (currently OpenAI) using your own account. Nothing is routed through us.
  • Nothing happens in the background. The app contacts OpenAI only when you send a message or click to check your connection. It doesn’t check for updates or send usage statistics.
  • Only what’s needed is shared. Each message goes out with a short, limited summary of the character you’re chatting about, never your bank, mail, bags or gold.
  • Your API key stays protected. It is kept in Windows Credential Manager, not in plain files, logs or game files.
  • This website doesn’t track you. No cookies, analytics or ads.

Character Information

The Adventure Buddy addon reads information that World of Warcraft makes available to addons about your own characters: name, realm, faction, race, class, level and experience, location (including map coordinates), stats, equipped items, carried bags, gold and currencies, talents, spells, your quest log, professions and known recipes, reputations, active effects and cooldowns, saved instance lockouts, and recent milestones like levels gained or quests completed.

When you open your bank or mailbox yourself, the addon also notes what it can see there: items in your bank, and mail headers (sender, subject, gold, cash-on-delivery amount and attachments). It never reads the text of your mail, and it never takes any action in the game for you.

World of Warcraft saves this in the addon’s saved-variables file on your computer, as it does for any addon. The desktop app reads that file and keeps the latest snapshot, plus up to six earlier ones for each character, inside its conversation files in a local folder for your Windows account. None of it is sent to us.

The addon doesn’t read game memory, intercept network traffic or automate gameplay.

AI Connections and API Keys

Adventure Buddy doesn’t provide an AI service. You connect your own OpenAI account with your own API key, and any usage is billed to that account.

Your key. The app stores your API key in Windows Credential Manager, protected for your Windows user. It isn’t written to the app’s settings, conversation history, logs or game files. Disconnecting in the app’s settings deletes it. Like any app, this can’t protect against malicious software already running under your Windows account.

The app only ever contacts OpenAI in two ways, and both start with something you do:

  • When you send a message. The request includes your message, up to the 20 most recent messages from that conversation, your companion’s personality and any custom instructions or reply-length preference you’ve set, and a limited summary of the character it’s about: name, faction, class, race, level and experience, current zone, stats, equipped items, active talents, part of your quest log, professions and a few recent milestones.
  • When you check your connection. Connecting a key or clicking to refresh your model list sends only your API key, to fetch the list of models your account can use. No messages or character information are included.

No background requests. The app doesn’t contact OpenAI when it starts, while it sits idle, when you switch characters, or when it picks up new character data from the game.

Never sent: your bank, mail, carried bags, gold and currencies, realm, map coordinates, item, quest or spell IDs, other characters’ information or your API key in the message itself.

An optional feature, currently off by default, lets the AI look up more detail about the same character’s equipment, quests or talents while answering. It never reaches other characters or the excluded categories above.

OpenAI processes this data under its own terms and privacy policy. The app asks OpenAI not to store responses for later retrieval, but that isn’t a guarantee about OpenAI’s own retention or safety monitoring. Please review OpenAI’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

Conversation History

Your conversations are saved on your computer, separately for each character, in the app’s local folder for your Windows account, along with the character snapshots described above. They aren’t uploaded to us, and nothing is deleted automatically: your history stays until you remove it. Recent messages from a conversation are included when you send a new message to your AI provider, as described above.

There isn’t an in-app button to delete history yet, and there’s no installer yet, so removing the app doesn’t remove its data. To remove everything Adventure Buddy keeps on your PC:

  1. Close Adventure Buddy and World of Warcraft.
  2. In the app’s AI settings, choose Disconnect to delete your stored API key. (You can also remove it in Windows Credential Manager, under Windows Credentials, from the entry whose name begins with CharacterGPT/provider/openai.)
  3. Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA% and press Enter. Delete only the folder named CharacterGPT. It holds the app’s settings, your conversation history, its copies of your character snapshots and the cached list of AI models.
  4. In your World of Warcraft game folder, open WTF\Account\, then your account’s SavedVariables folder, and delete only CharacterGPT.lua (and CharacterGPT.lua.bak, if there is one). Repeat for each account folder you’ve used.
  5. To remove the addon itself, delete the CharacterGPT folder from your game’s Interface\AddOns folder.

Draft: these folder and file names come from the current development build, which still uses the working name CharacterGPT. They are expected to change when Adventure Buddy is released, and this section will be updated before launch.

Website Data and Outside Services

adventurebuddy.app is a simple static website. Its pages set no cookies and use no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and there are no forms or accounts. Its fonts and images are served from the site itself, not from outside services.

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address and browser details to deliver pages and protect against abuse. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

The Support Us page links to Ko-fi; nothing from Ko-fi loads on this site. If you choose to leave a tip, Ko-fi handles it under its own privacy policy, and may share details you provide there, such as your name and any message you leave, with us as the page owner. No payment information passes through this website.

Draft: when downloads become available, this section will say where they’re hosted.

Your Control Over Your Information

  • Your messages and character details go to your AI provider only when you press Send. Checking your connection sends only your API key.
  • You can disconnect your AI account at any time, which deletes the stored API key.
  • You can delete everything the app and addon keep on your PC by following the steps under Conversation History.
  • For anything already sent to OpenAI, use OpenAI’s own account and data controls.
